Quiet Day - The midnight well
- Speaker:
- David Mayhew
Darkness is part of the cycle of life.
We can also go through dark and difficult times in our lives. And when we look at the problems in the world, despair can easily overwhelm us.
The incredible testimony of past saints, such as John of the Cross who coined the phrase ‘Dark Night of the Soul,’ is that with God, darkness is never the end of the story.
In fact, that can be the time we draw deeper from the well of God’s love, and draw closer to Him. The experience can transform us, and make us wiser and more compassionate people.
On this day dedicated to ‘Midnight Wells,’ we shall be exploring how the people of God in the Bible and history, not only survived difficult dark times, but were transformed through it. We shall look at some of the keys that helped them, such as creativity and nature… and above all, a fresh encounter with the Lord Himself.
In the words of Malcolm Guite:
In the rich midnight came the lovely other…
And now you call us all to hear that Fountain
Singing and playing well before the dawn
The sun is still below this shadowed mountain
We wait in darkness for him to be born.
Before he rises, light-winged with the lark,
We’ll meet with our beloved in the dark.
